Forgot Your ID Before an ATL Flight? Check Before Turning Back

If your ID is missing on the way to Atlanta Airport, check for another accepted ID before asking the driver to turn back. If you have none, the next decision is whether you can retrieve it or need to use TSA’s identity verification process. Both take time.

If your ID is somewhere you can reach

Call the person at the hotel, office or home before changing the route. Ask them to confirm that they have found the actual ID and can hand it over. Knowing where you last used it is different from having it ready to collect.

Then assess the whole trip: the drive to collect it, time to get inside or meet the person, and the drive back to the correct ATL terminal. Ask the car company whether it can accommodate that route and what the extra stop or waiting would cost.

Compare the revised arrival with your airline’s check-in and bag-drop deadlines, time for security, and the deadline to be at the gate. A route estimate that reaches ATL before the aircraft’s departure does not establish that you can board. If the timing is too tight, contact the airline about your options before committing to the detour.

If someone offers to bring the ID to you, agree on a specific handoff place and time. Avoid sending a car toward an item that has not been found or cannot yet be released.

If you cannot retrieve an accepted ID

TSA ConfirmID has been available since February 1, 2026. It lets travelers age 18 or older who lack acceptable ID pay $45 for TSA to attempt to verify their identity. Payment does not guarantee that TSA can verify you or let you through security.

Use the official TSA ConfirmID form on Pay.gov for current instructions. Enter the traveler’s legal name and travel start date accurately. The payment is valid for 10 days from the start date entered. Bring the emailed receipt, printed or electronic, each time you use the process during that period. Each adult without acceptable ID must complete the process separately.

Paying before you reach the airport can avoid a payment task there, but it does not remove identity checks. ATL says the process can take 30 minutes or more. Travelers who join the security line without accepted ID may be sent to another location for ConfirmID before returning to the checkpoint. Do not treat 30 minutes as a maximum or as your total airport time.

Confirm the ride change before moving

Tell the transport company whether you are continuing to ATL, collecting the ID first, or waiting for the airline to change your flight. Confirm the revised pickup or stop, terminal, waiting terms and price. A message asking for a change is not confirmation that it has been accepted.

For a shared ride, discuss whether the other travelers should continue to the airport while the affected passenger makes a separate plan. The group-departure guide explains how to set airport arrival targets for different passengers. If the airline changes the flight, use the flight-change booking guide to update the ground trip too.
