ATL Layover Guide
Do not judge the trip by the scheduled layover alone. The usable part begins after you leave the aircraft and ends when you need to be back at the correct checkpoint. This guide helps you find that usable window before you choose a destination.
Airport and transit details checked September 26, 2026. Airline, immigration and security times can change on the day.
Is your layover long enough?
| Scheduled layover | Sensible plan |
|---|---|
| Under 5 hours | Stay at ATL. A delay, long walk or security line can remove the small amount of city time. |
| 5–6 hours | Consider only a nearby stop if you have no baggage or immigration delay and your onward flight is domestic. |
| 6–8 hours | A short Downtown visit can work. Choose one compact area and set a firm departure time. |
| 8+ hours | You have more room for Downtown, a meal and normal transport variation, but still protect the return buffer. |
These are planning ranges, not airport or airline guarantees. Stay inside ATL if your inbound flight is late, your tickets are separate, you must collect checked bags, you need mobility assistance, or missing the next flight would seriously disrupt the trip.
Build your real time budget
Start with the scheduled departure of your next flight and work backward. ATL recommends arriving at least two hours before a domestic departure and three hours before an international departure. Use that as your return-to-terminal target, not the time you plan to leave Downtown. Check the airport’s live checkpoint information on the day.
Now subtract the parts people often forget:
- Taxiing to the gate and leaving the aircraft
- The Plane Train or walk from your concourse
- Immigration, customs or baggage collection when required
- The trip from ATL to your destination
- Walking from the station or curb to the place you want to visit
- The full trip back to the correct terminal
Example: A six-hour layover is not six hours in Atlanta. If it takes 45 minutes to reach public transportation, about 20 minutes each way to Downtown, and you return two hours before a domestic flight, less than two and a half hours remain before station waits, walking and traffic variation.
International connections need more time
An international itinerary can add immigration, customs, baggage and terminal steps. Confirm with the airline whether your bag transfers automatically or must be collected and checked again. A traveler entering the United States also needs to be legally admitted before leaving the airport.
MARTA’s Airport Station is inside the Domestic Terminal. If you exit at the International Terminal, ATL provides a free shuttle to the Domestic Terminal ground transportation area. The airport says the terminal shuttle runs about every 15 minutes; waiting and riding both use part of the layover.
For an international departure, ATL recommends returning three hours before the flight. That larger buffer is why a six-hour international layover may provide little useful city time even when the same length domestic layover appears workable.
What can you do Downtown?
Choose one small area instead of trying to tour Atlanta. Peachtree Center works for nearby hotels and restaurants. SEC District Station serves the Georgia World Congress Center and the Centennial Olympic Park area. Five Points is a transfer point, but it is not automatically the best stop for every attraction.
MARTA’s Airport Station is the end of the Red and Gold lines, so a northbound train takes you toward Downtown without a transfer for these central stops. Our ATL-to-Downtown guide compares the current train, taxi, rideshare and private-car options, including station locations and public fares.
Pick a place that does not require a timed admission or a second long ride. A meal or short walk is easier to abandon if the inbound flight arrives late. A museum ticket, stadium event or cross-city itinerary is a poor fit for a tight layover.
Plan the return before leaving ATL
Before you leave the terminal, save the next flight number, boarding time, terminal and checkpoint information. Set two alarms: one for the time to finish your visit and one for the time you must start moving toward ATL.
Check MARTA service notices or road traffic again before the return. If you use rail, remember that service does not run all night. If you use a car, choose the pickup address and meeting side of the street in advance rather than arranging it when you are already late.
Keep identification, medication and essential items with you. Do not leave the secure area if the airline has told you to remain available for a gate change, standby seat or irregular-operation update.
When a prebooked car helps
A prebooked car can make sense when you want to go directly to one address, have several passengers, or need a confirmed return pickup. It does not make a short layover safe by itself: Atlanta traffic and airport processing still need room in the plan.
For an ATL airport car service request, send both flight numbers, the place you want to visit, passenger count, luggage and the time you must be back at the terminal. If you choose a car after arrival, first read where to meet a prebooked chauffeur at ATL.
